for their dues, which cannot with any show of decency be kept from them, I have it in contemplation at the request of the Trustees to pass Ordinance authorizing that body to raise sum for the purpose of liquidating this portion of the debt, the amount to be secured on the Pew Rents. This is an alternative to which I would regret to find myself compelled to resort, inasmuch as the annual amount

Pew Rents will not more than suffice to keep the Church in repair, and to pay other incidental expenses.

I think it right to advise Your Lordship that the present Church trustees were appointed to their office on the 25th of last April, and that 5 of them are entirely distinct from those whose communications to my address I forwarded to Your Lordships in Despatches No. 27 of May 1848, and No. 54 of the same month, 1849.

Since writing the foregoing,

I have received a letter from Mr Campbell, one of the Church Trustees, of which I beg to enclose a copy for Your Lordship's information.

This communication does not appear to me to alter the merits, for I cannot admit that the trustees have any claim on the Government beyond that recognized by the terms of Ordinance No. 2 of 1847, namely £4,600;
